families, approximately 60% live in Boston.

child and one school-age child would need to earn $42,000/yr to pay market rate for an apartment, child care, health care,
and other living expenses (Massachusetts Family Economic Self-Sufficiency project). The average working mother coming off
of welfare earns $17,000/year. This is the reason that one-fifth of homeless heads of household can retain a job and still
not have enough money for housing.
